Get out and Experiment!
Children are born scientists, always experimenting with something! Whether they’re blowing bubbles in the bathtub, throwing spaghetti against the wall or watching their toy cars speed down a homemade ramp, they are constantly exploring the world around them. In these classes, participants will learn about various topics in science through different activities and hands-on discovery. Each session will focus on a different subject and participants will receive a theme related t-shirt! Session topics will include Weather, Human Body and Dinosaurs!
Holiday recipes will be used to create delicious food ranging from your grandma’s classics to fun and innovative treats! Participants will learn the basics of kitchen safety, proper food handling, and food preparation in these single session classes. Each session will bake two to three different recipes. Avoid the mess in your kitchen and register for these hands on classes! These classes may use wheat, milk, eggs, peanut, tree nut, soybean, fish or shellfish ingredients.
This class is offered in the summer months. For specific dates, times and registration information click on Register Online button.
Imagine a place where students get to problem-solve, collaborate, communicate and build STEM skills through teamwork. Imagine a classroom where learning is truly personalized and students are motivated to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Students will participate in a hands-on learning experience using tools such as Lego Robotics, K’nex Simple Machine, Pixie Digital Storytelling and a 3D printer in this fun and challenging class! If you have taken SMART Lab before, you can continue right where you left off in a previous class. The North Dakota Center for Distance Education (NDCDE) will provide trained instructors.
PODS Game Design is a locally owned business with an emphasis on inspiring youth of the Red River Valley to enhance their creativity through game design. All computers and software/programs are provided for these classes. No equipment is required to participate, making this class a great opportunity to experience computer programming. At the end of a PODS class, students will take their game home with them! Questions? Please e-mail email@example.com.
Beginner Game Design
In this shortened version of our Video Game Design Camp, we will use powerful game creation software to build a role-playing game (RPG). Students will lay out their maps and levels, build their heroes, give them awesome powers and skills, conjure some monsters, program their quests, and write their own epic story! There may even be some dungeons and dragons as well! At the end of class, students will put their game onto a CD so they can bring it home to show to family and friends. No previous game design experience is necessary for this class.
Advanced Design: Town Building Game
Students will create a town-building system, beginning with a town of a single house. Players must gather resources, purchase upgrades to make more buildings and find people throughout the world to move into the new houses. Students will program the resource harvesting system, the town upgrade system and the people who can live in the town! At the end of class, students will take their game home! Previous experience in a PODS Game Design class is strongly encouraged.
Advanced Design: Town Building Game
In this special project class, students will develop a town-building system. Through gathering resources like wood and stone to purchase upgrades, students will program their village to expand from a single lonely house to a flourishing town, as well as the different people who can move into the new town! Will this new town be full of industrious, hard-working people striving to help the heroes on their epic quest to save the world…or will a bunch of couch potatoes move in? It’s up to you! Students will program the harvesting system, the town upgrade system, and make their own people to move into the new town! It’s the perfect addition to an existing project from the Video Game Design Camp or the Beginner class, or one that can be made into its own game! No previous game design experience is necessary, though previous experience in a PODS Game Design class or concurrent enrollment in the Beginner Video Game Design class is strongly encouraged.
Advanced Design: Map Design
During this unique game design class, students will flex their artistic skills and draw their OWN Fantasy-themed map, similar to those found in Dungeons & Dragons or Lord of the Rings, which they can incorporate into their game! Once we’ve connected their own artwork into the game, students will build the traveling system, allowing their heroes to travel to new locations only after “discovering” them! Maybe they’ll even find some treasure (or bandits) along the way by building in a randomized travel event system! Previous enrollment in a PODS Game Design class or concurrent enrollment in the Beginner Video Game Design class is strongly encouraged to ensure participants have the knowledge to create games.
