Get out and Experiment!

Drone Discovery

The West Fargo Park District is excited to partner with NDSU 4-H Extension to hold this exciting new class. Local speakers and highly trained instructors will teach participants about flight dynamics, how to fly a drone and how they are used for work and pleasure. Participants will be able to demo various drones and complete simulated activities. This is a “rain or shine” class; activities will be moved inside the activity center if raining. Participants will bring home a model drone at the end of class.

LEGO Time

Each child will build their own LEGO project and then play with others with their new creations. LEGO projects will not be taken home as they will be used by youth throughout the summer.

SMART Lab

Imagine a place where students get to problem-solve, collaborate, communicate and build STEM skills through teamwork. Imagine a classroom where learning is truly personalized and students are motivated to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Students will participate in a hands-on learning experience using tools such as Lego Robotics, K’nex Simple Machine, Pixie Digital Storytelling and a 3D printer in this fun and challenging class! If you have taken SMART Lab before, you can continue right where you left off in a previous class. The North Dakota Center for Distance Education (NDCDE) is excited to partner with the West Fargo Park District to offer this fun learning course!

Video Game Design Classes

PODS Game Design is a locally owned business with an emphasis on inspiring youth of the Red River Valley to enhance their creativity through game design. PODS Game Design provides all computers and software/programs for these classes, so no additional equipment is required to participate, making this class a great opportunity for youth to get experience in computer programming.

Video Game Design: Beginner RPG Game Design

The beginner class gives students a strong overview of powerful game making software as they create their first Role-Playing Game (RPG)! Students will lay out their maps, build their heroes, give them unique skills, create monsters for them to fight, and program quests! There may even be some dungeons and dragons! At the end of class, students will put their game onto a CD so they can bring it home to show family and friends! No previous game design experience necessary.

 

Video Game Design: Ocean Cleanup

Earth’s oceans are filled with trash! Use your boat’s net to collect all the rubbish and avoid the fish! Students will build this game from start to finish, including programming all the features and designing their own levels! At the end of class, students will take their game home with them! No previous game design experience necessary.

 

Video Game Design: Donut Invaders

Earth has been invaded by flying donuts from outer space and it’s up to you to pilot your laser cannon to blast them out of the sky! Students will build this game from start to finish, including programming all the features and designing their own levels! At the end of class, students will take their game home with them!  No previous game design experience necessary.

 

Video Game Design: Mouse Maze

Guide the mouse through the maze to collect all the cheese before the cat catches you! Students will build this game from start to finish, including programming all the features and designing their own levels! At the end of class, students will take their game home with them! No previous game design experience necessary.

 

Special Project: Town-Building Game

In this special project, students will create a town-building system. The game will begin with a town of a single house. The player must gather resources, purchase upgrades to make more buildings in the town, and find people throughout the world to move into the new houses. Students will program the resource harvesting system, the town upgrade system, and the people who can live in the town! At the end of class, students will take their game home with them! No previous game design experience necessary.

 

Advanced Game Design: Mechanics & Formulas

In this special project, students will create a town-building system. The game will begin with a town of a single house. The player must gather resources, purchase upgrades to make more buildings in the town, and find people throughout the world to move into the new houses. Students will program the resource harvesting system, the town upgrade system, and the people who can live in the town! At the end of class, students will take their game home with them! Completion of the Beginner RPG Game Design Class is strongly encouraged.
